The Next Step

The Next Step

People who do not run, have no desire to run or see others running have asked, ‘how do you do that?’

The simple answer, ‘just put one foot in front of the other, keep moving, until you have reached the goal.’

There have been times I asked the same question, especially, at the point in a run or race when you think you have given all you have.

But, in most cases I kept going, just thinking about keeping forward momentum, putting one foot in front of the other until the goal is reached.

What’s your goal?

Is it a race, trying to restart a routine of running or being committed to a plan?  We never get there unless we take the next step.

I so admire the group that meets for the Breakfast Club run each Thursday mornings at Fleet Feet, not because they are the greatest or fastest runners in the 256, but because they take the step of getting to the starting point.  From there the encouragement of friends helps motivate the next step which in turns gets them on a course to meet a goal.

Step 1. Tonight, the wake-up alarm will be set for early.
Step 2. The running clothes may be chosen before bedtime.
Step 3. Out the door and into the car.
Step 4. Out the car and waiting for friends.
Step 5. The first steps of running.

Somewhere in the run, they make one of their steps the decision just to take the next step, but doing so propels them to the goal.

If you don’t have a place to run tomorrow morning come and give the Breakfast Club a try.  It can all start by making the step of setting the wake-up alarm.

The route for tomorrow morning is called Two Before Hills and it is five miles.  However, it can be shortened to meet your needs.

We meet at Fleet Feet and our first running steps begin at 5:30am.
