A ‘man’ list

2012 brings with it my 30th wedding anniversary. I was and am blessed with a Godly wife who is a dedicated Christ-follower. God and His Spirit have been with us and protected us, allowing us to journey through life. I am so thankful for His protection and guidance.

My children are now in their late teens and middle twenties, and if it is in God’s plan, the day until their journey into marriage is close.

I keep wondering have I been a good a dad? Have I been and am I a good role model to my children? Do I show proper love and honor to my wife?

I am right in the middle of reading the new book from Mark Driscoll, Real Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship, and Life Together. In the book Mark and his wife explore the God authored principles for a healthy marriage. In a chapter just for men, Mark lays out a list of eleven things that every man should be implementing in their home. Continue Reading…

Too Late To Learn New Things…NOT

I learn so much from my children.

Just recently my son said: “I’m going to teach myself to play the up-right string bass.”

It wasn’t “I wish I knew how” it was “I will”

What age in life did do we adults lose that way of thinking?

We are not too old to learn something new.

If we don’t keep our minds open to new things in this electronic, digital age…we will be left behind.

What are you thankful for today?

Yesterday a simple twitter post from Pete Wilson (@pwilson) reminded me just how much I have to be thankful for.

It read something like this: ‘what is one thing you are thankful for today?’

The first thing that came to my mind was my family and that they all are pursuing Christ. They all are great examples of Christ-followers.

I am a blessed man:

Melissa my wife a great support for me and example of un-conditional love.

Meagan my daughter who recently graduated from Lee University and now is serving Christ as a short-term missionary in Peru.

Spencer my son, who I caught this week on the way out to his car to go to school with his bible in hand. When I ask why he had his bible he stated that I take it every day and read some while waiting to go into school.

I am a blessed man.

Thank you God for the gift of this family who loves You and me.

But Even If…

Just this past May I was able to celebrate with my daughter as she graduated from Lee University. Graduating from college is a great accomplishment and I am very proud of her.

But I am just as proud, if not more so, of what she is doing today.

Just before she graduated she accepted a position with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to be a Hands On missionary for a four month term which began mid August. Her assignment is in the mountains of Peru in the village of Recauy. Continue Reading…

5 Things We Learned In 29 Years of Vacations.

Sometime during our first year of marriage my wife and I made a decision to take a vacation each year. We realized that it was going to be important to get away from our routine to relax and recharge. In that decision we also realized that it would be important to get away from our home, this would help break the routine. For us this meant not visiting relatives. Family is welcomed to travel with us and that has often been the case but for us it really it is not vacation spending any length of time in someone’s home. In 29 years of marriage we have been fortunate to be able to take a vacation 28 of those years. (There was the one year in graduate school that we couldn’t afford a vacation.)

Here are some things we have learned: Continue Reading…
